The Classical Approach to Education

At St. Anthony Academy, our curriculum is rooted in the rich tradition of Classical Catholic education. Guided by the wisdom of the Church and the Classical Trivium, we seek to form students who are knowledgeable, thoughtful, articulate, and virtuous.

The Classical Trivium consists of three stages of learning: Grammar, Logic, and Rhetoric. These stages correspond to the natural development of children and help students build a strong academic foundation while growing in wisdom and faith.

The Grammar Stage

In the early years, students are naturally eager to absorb information and commit it to memory. During this stage, children build a foundation of knowledge by learning the essential facts, vocabulary, and skills of every subject.

In language studies, students learn grammar, spelling, and vocabulary. In mathematics, they master basic operations and math facts. In history, they learn important people, events, and dates. In geography, they become familiar with continents, countries, rivers, and mountains. Students also memorize prayers, Scripture passages, poetry, and catechism questions.

This foundation gives students the knowledge they will need for deeper understanding in later years.

The Logic Stage

As students mature, they naturally begin asking “why?” During the Logic stage, they learn to analyze information, recognize relationships, and think critically.

Students study formal logic, learn how to evaluate arguments, and begin examining how ideas connect across subjects. They learn to ask thoughtful questions, seek evidence, and reason carefully. This stage helps students develop intellectual discipline and a love of truth.

The Rhetoric Stage

In the final stage of the Trivium, students learn to communicate clearly, persuasively, and charitably. They build upon the knowledge and reasoning skills developed in earlier years to express their ideas through speaking and writing.

Students study great works of literature, history, philosophy, and theology while learning from master communicators such as Aristotle, Cicero, and the Church Fathers. They participate in discussions, presentations, debates, and writing assignments that help them grow in confidence and eloquence.

Forming the Whole Person

Classical Catholic education is about more than academic achievement. It seeks to cultivate wisdom, virtue, and a lifelong love of learning. By integrating faith and reason, students learn to recognize truth, appreciate beauty, and pursue goodness in all areas of life.

The faculty and administration of St. Anthony Academy continually refine and strengthen the curriculum in light of experience and best practices in classical education. All instruction and materials are carefully selected to ensure fidelity to the teachings of the Catholic Church and to support the intellectual and spiritual formation of every student.
