Dictation/ Spelling

Teachers know that it is not unusual for a student to spell words correctly in a list, but misspell them in a sentence. Dictation is the best way to combat this problem. In addition to helping students become good spellers, dictation also helps significantly with correct usage of grammar, punctuation and vocabulary. Selections properly made, and administered, pave the way for superior composition work.

Students in first grade begin dictation by writing simple sentences that are read to them by the teacher. Dictation continues through eighth grade whereby students must be able to write increasingly complex paragraphs from dictation.
